  1. I’m very much looking forward to Friday evening’s discussion. My experience at BAC is as one half of a male artistic directorship of two producers, neither of whom direct. So I’m really interested to hear the panel’s experiences and the differences and similarities in stories of careers to date. I’m also hoping we might get some top tips from the panel on their strategies for approaching that ‘steeper climb’.

So our first In Process/In Performance panel went really well and was attended by about 20 people. Introducing each of the panel members, David Micklem asked each of them to talk briefly about their work and their experiences of being artistic leaders. Their experiences were very different but each talked about the importance of promoting a ‘family’ culture in companies – the nurturing of company members and their work – and each said that collaboration was at the core of their work,multi-tasking an essentail skill. The notion of a ‘steeper climb’ was addressed and the idea that success is uniform, or even measurable, discussed.

Lots of good questions and a lively discussion from the floor:

    - do women make good administrators because they like to serve?
    - do women artists assume that they will need to do everything without support where men have teams?
    – can you be a succesful artistic director and be a mother?
    - can you business plan for pregnancy?
    – who are the ‘gate-keepers’ in the arts and why are they mostly men?
    - why are we even having this discussion in 2010?

Our next panel is on 16th September at 9.30pm after the Bone/Pinchbeck/Corrieri showings. Hope to see you there.

  3. As a continuation from many of the issues raised during the panel discussion people may be interested to see this at the Young Vic Theatre in London:

Working in theatre and having a family. Is it possible? How does it work? Does becoming a parent change you as a theatre maker?
    Wednesday 6 October
    7.30pm – 9.00pm
    Clare Theatre
Cyril Connelly once said “there is no more sombre enemy of good art than the pram in the hallway.” In this round table discussion four theatre artists openly discuss their own experiences of trying to balance having children with working in the theatre. An opportunity to discuss everything from the mundane and practical to the philosophical and artistic – with a range of theatre makers of different disciplines.
    The panel consists of:
Carrie Cracknell – Artistic Director Gate Theatre & Associate Director Young Vic
Sacha Wares – Associate Director Royal Court Theatre & Associate Director Young Vic
Joanna Read – Head of LAMDA
    Effie Loy – Freelance Director
