Brighton-based Actors of Dionysus is the UK’s only theatre company dedicated to new translations and adaptations of classical Greek drama.
Following a five-day development at Brighton Dome, the company presents a preview of its new production of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata – a comic account of one woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War. Adapted by David Stuttard and directed by Mitch Mitchelson.
Free, but limited availability. If you would like to attend, e-mail ad@brightondome.org including “Work in Progress: Lysistrata” in the subject line.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this work develop. The greek tragedies have been well mined for performance in recent years (especially in relation to war) but the comedies seem largely neglected. This has the potential to give us all a different perception on the greeks, war and what’s funny. Can’t wait.

We’re into our third week of rehearsals and I cannot say it’s been uneventful. With one actor dropping out due to a detached retina and the rain stopping play for some time (our scaffolding set is rigged outdoors!) it’s been a little traumatic, but now we are firmly back on track and making progress. The play itself has been a joy to work on – a full blown comedy/farce with a serious underlying message – and being our first full length comedy we’ve been relishing both the light and shade of it. We’ve plenty of work still to do but it’s starting to take shape and the same infernal machine that operates in tragedy is equally apparent in Lysistrata – it moves at apace and there’s plenty of meat in between, with or without the phalluses!

Comedy and tragedy are neighbours whose doors open on to the same street, our common humanity. Comedy is as adept as tragedy in illuminating our lives and histories and can equally deal with serious issues. A play like ‘Lysistrata” has ancient comedic roots , yet can still resonate with us today. We are exploring its satirical, farcical and absurdist rhythms while listening to the darker hues and themes that edge its playful and irreverent centre. A humbling, challenging and at times exhilarating experience as a rehearsal process. Mitch Mitchelson, Director

We are now 4 weeks into our tour and the show has gone from strength to strength. Writing this en route from Cambridge to Portsmouth I now have time to reflect on the journey that we have traveled so far and despite a quite faltering start, what with technical and personnel issues, we now have a company and show that gains ground with each new day. The production itself has been extremely well received with many sell-out shows and many new venues asking us to visit them next season. We hope to re-develop and re-tour this show as we think it has a life well beyond this Autumn! We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to develop this work with the Dome and hope that we can continue this fruitful relationship long into the future……
